Yesterday I was working at home. Kat made up a “blendie” in the morning that I think had too many carrots and was missing something else that might have thinned it down a little. She also followed a recibe that said to leave the lime peel on, and that was a big mistake. We were picking nasty little bits of rind out as we tried to down what we knew was healthy but just not all together palatable.

We also picked up some further reading material on this topic from the library. There are interesting debates on blending vs. juicing. Many argue that juicing is really the best way to go for basically two interrelated reasons.

  1. More nutrients are extracted through juicing that are otherwise bound up in the pulp.
  2. Consuming the pulp means those fibers have to be digested. Not all those bound nutrients may be extracted through digestion, and more bodily energy is expended in the digestion process.
There are methods of juicing with a blender, but they involve straining the resultant mash through something like a nut milk bag to extract the juice. We’ll see if we get to that point. We’re pretty happy with the blendies we’re making now – with the exception of the strange, thick concoction from yesterday.
Today, I’m off to another meeting all day. My method of freezing a couple of blendies for the road for Monday and Tuesday this week worked great. That was breakfast one day and lunch the next. Today, I made up a blendie with the following:
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 kiwis
  • 2 oranges
  • 2 bananas
  • 1 apple
  • 1/3 cucumber
  • 2 big handfuls of spinach leaves
  • Small slice of ginger root, skin on (yeah! finally remembered)
This made up my two 18 oz bottles. I’ll leave one of those for Kat and drink the other for breakfast on my way this morning. I already had about a half cup that was left over after filling the bottles, and it was quite delicious. The ginger root really adds a nice zing.
I’m not sure if the fresh fruits and veggies are directly related, but I think I did manage to avoid getting sick again over the last two days. After being so sick over the holidays, I really couldn’t afford to go downhill again. I started taking Cold Snap as well a couple days ago. I still feel a little off this morning, but the sore throat has dissipated, and I think I’m through the almost-sick. So, perhaps the healthier diet has something to do with it as well – nothing scientifically valid but a possible correlation.
